Villarreal president Jose Manuel Laneza expressed his opinion on Xavi Hernandez taking over the responsibility of coaching the Catalan team before the expected confrontation between the two teams in the Spanish League.

The 73-year-old told Mundo Deportivo newspaper, in an interview with him on the sidelines of the Villarreal match with Barcelona, that he had experienced seven Barcelona presidencies and had already met six presidents.

When asked about his judgment on Barcelona’s current performance, Laniza said: “I do not talk about other clubs and do not judge others in difficult and happy times.”

“For football, we hope that Barcelona will be strong and so will Real Madrid, because the league will be better and the TV rights will be better for everyone,” the Villarreal president added.

And about the league without Messi, he replied: “There are new generations to come that can also shine, such as Pino, Gavi and Fati. Real Madrid lost Di Stefano and recovered, and the same thing happened to Barcelona after Cruyff’s departure.”

On his opinion of Xavi taking over the training of Barca, the Villarreal president replied: “He was already a phenomenon as a player, and he controlled referees and matches and was distinguished by leadership qualities.”

He continued, “I am confident that he will be able to succeed as a coach as well, because he dedicates his life to football and this is an advantage.”
