Supporters of La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have taken to social media in numbers on Saturday evening, to take aim at one member of the club’s squad.
De Jong not enough
The Blaugrana marked their return to action a short time ago.
After firmly reestablishing themselves in the race for European football over the course of the last month, Xavi’s Hernandez’s troops made the trip to Los Carmenes, eyeing a 3rd-straight victory across all competitions at the expense of Granada.
Unfortunately, however, when all was said and done, Barca came up just short.
A hard-fought 90 minutes, across which either side could have added further to the scoreline, ultimately culminated in the visitors being forced to settle for a share of the spoils, in a 1-1 stalemate.
Luuk de Jong, for the 2nd time in the space of a week, looked set to guide Xavi and co. to all three points, after putting Barcelona ahead courtesy of a fine header just shy of the hour mark:
Granada, though, had other ideas.
Just as proceedings got set to roll into injury time at Los Carmenes, Antonio Puertas rattled home a fine equaliser, dealing a hefty blow to the Champions League qualification hopes of their opponents in the process.
Gavi and Xavi targeted
On the back of the full-time whistle bringing a close to another disappointing day’s work for their side on Saturday, it should therefore come as little surprise to hear of the Barcelona faithful seeking out a scapegoat.
A number of the Blaugrana’s stars failed to cover themselves in glory over the course of the 90 minutes, but one in particular, in the form of youngster Gavi, has since been singled out for the most widespread criticism.
This comes after the 17-year-old provided a timely reminder of his inexperience at the top level, in picking up a needless 2nd yellow card ten minutes from time:
Whilst so many have opted to point the finger of blame squarely at Gavi for Barca’s latest pair of dropped points, though, others have taken issue with the management of Xavi.
This comes owing to the Blaugrana icon’s decision not to hook his fledgling midfield talent from proceedings earlier, as Gavi walked the disciplinary tightrope whilst booked:
