De Jong: I am sad about my comments after the Real Madrid match.. Our goal is to qualify for the European Champions League
Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong expressed his sadness over the statements he made after the Real Madrid match in the Spanish Super Cup.
De Jong said after the match that he was proud of his team’s performance despite the defeat.
Barcelona managed to achieve a difficult victory away from home against its counterpart, Deportivo Alaves, with a goal free of charge, in the match that was held at the latter’s stadium in the 22nd round of the Spanish League.
De Jong scored Barcelona’s only goal in the match, taking advantage of a cross from Ferran Torres in the 87th minute.
De Jong told reporters after the match, “It was an important match because we are in a difficult stage, the pitch was frozen and it was difficult to play on it.”
And the international player continued, “We have to be better with the ball, especially on the opponent’s court, and this is how we create spaces.”
He continued, “We did not play badly against Real Madrid, but it saddened me to say that I am proud despite the defeat, because in Barcelona if we lose we must be disappointed.”
“Our goal is to qualify for the Champions League and we’ll see what places we get in the end.”
And he added, “I feel very good now because I scored a goal. People say I’m playing well. I think many people don’t watch matches. I can improve a lot. My performance is not catastrophic, but it is a bit average and I can improve.”
Barcelona is fifth in the Spanish League standings, with 35 points, one point behind Atletico Madrid, who is in fourth place.
