Ronaldo Koeman, the former Barcelona coach, spoke about the period in which he coached the Blaugrana, and about his relationship with Joan Laporta, the head of the Catalan team.
It seems that Dutch coach Ronald Koeman, the former coach of Barcelona, has decided to break the long period of silence, to lead a fierce attack on the “Bulugrana” management led by Joan Laporta, the club’s president.
Koeman was dismissed from Barcelona’s training in October 2021 after a period of fluctuating results, with Xavi Hernandez taking over as coach a week after his dismissal.
The Dutch coach said he was in pain, and that his departure from Barcelona was “the most difficult moment for me as a coach”.
Koeman made controversial statements during his interview with the Dutch newspaper “Algemeen Dagblad”, and talked about the appointment of Xavi, saying: “Laporta told me a thousand times that Xavi will not coach the team, because he lacks experience.”
“You won’t see me at Camp Nou for a while, I can’t do that yet, with this president (Laporta) I can’t pretend that nothing happened.”
He continued, “They didn’t give me the time they gave Xavi, it’s still painful for me.”
He continued, “I was working with many injured players, and now Pedri is back in his technical and physical form, as well as Ousmane Dembele, everything can be seen.”
Koeman commented on Barcelona’s contracts with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Dani Alves after his departure.
“I would have loved them too, but I’m happy for the club, as things are going better now,” he said. “It’s good to see Frenkie de Jong playing good old-fashioned football, that gave them a lot of quality.”
Koeman blamed himself during the interview because he may have been thinking too much about the club’s interests rather than himself, and lamented the loss of players like Lionel Messi.
And he added, “At the insistence of the club’s management, I agreed to leave some players to arrange financial matters, but then you see that they signed a player for 55 million euros shortly after giving up Messi,” referring to Barcelona’s contract with Ferran Torres.
And he added: “Then you wonder if something else is happening, why did Messi have to leave in the first place?”
How does Koeman feel about Laporta?
During the interview, the veteran Dutch coach talked about his relationship with Joan Laporta after his arrival to the Barcelona presidency in March of last year.
He added: “I was not a Laporta coach, I had this feeling from the first moment, after the elections there was no necessary communication or support from the administration.”
He explained: “I did not care about money, I really wanted to succeed as a coach for Barcelona, and to do everything in my power, but I realized that Laporta wanted to get rid of me, because he did not appoint me.”
Koeman concluded his statements: “He told me thousands of times that Xavi would not be his coach, because he lacked experience, but he needed a shield and someone to hide behind.”
