After losing Lionel Messi last summer and appearing without direction under Ronald Koeman, it looked as if everything was lost at Barcelona last summer.
The Catalan giants are still saddled with great debts after poor management under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, which kept them counting pennies as Real Madrid raced in the title race.
However, while everything was bleak at the Nou Camp, there seemed to be a lot of hope on the horizon.
With Xavi now in charge and new signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres shining through, Barcelona are starting to get back on their feet in LaLiga.
Their confirmed 4-0 victory in the Clasico earlier this month signaled that they are ready to compete again but not without a major summer refresh – and it looks like it has already started.
Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, announced on Tuesday that the club had already signed a midfielder and defender, but “he was not allowed to give their names”.
Those two players are believed to be AC Milan midfielder Frank Kessie and Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, both of whom have had their contracts expired in the summer at their club and are now allowed to negotiate a move to foreign clubs before the end of the season.
Meanwhile, Barcelona are also hoping to sign a huge name, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland linking the moves.
However, before they can bring in anyone else, they will need to make a lot of space on the wage bill.
According to AS, Barcelona will allow eight players to leave in order to reduce the wage bill and allow them to sign new signings.
The report indicates that the Catalan giants opened the door to exit for the likes of Neto, Serge Roberto, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti, Oscar Mingueza, Ricky Puig, Martin Braithwaite and Luke de Jong.
If they can shake off their dead forest and manage to bypass the financial constraints that haunt the club, the excitement and hope will return to the Nou Camp with one of them in Xavi leading the battle against arch-rivals Real Madrid next season.
Their summer possessions combined with their fortunes will make the young talents already at the club a force to be reckoned with.
But with all that in mind, how exactly can Barcelona line up next season? Sportsmail takes a look at a potential starting lineup, along with a star-studded bench.
Goalkeeper: Marc-Andre ter Stegen
The German is now in his eighth season at Barcelona and has been a permanent figure among the sticks at the Nou Camp.
He’s not facing much opposition either, and at 29 it appears he is preparing to see the rest of his contract, which he extended two years ago until the summer of 2025.
Xavi will want someone he can count on in goal and will make sure to keep former team-mate Ter Stegen happy for as long as possible.
Right-back: Cesar Azpilicueta
Another Chelsea player who looks set to join the Catalan giants this summer is Cesar Azpilicueta.
Barcelona were linked with snapping up the Spaniard in the summer once his contract expired.
Spanish news agency Sport has claimed the club are ‘close to agreeing a deal’ with Azpilicueta which will see him go straight into the right-back position, given that Roberto appears set to leave.
Central Defence: Eric Garcia
While Gerard Pique has insisted he has no plans to retire this summer, Xavi could seek to give Eric Garcia a more prominent role in the squad.
The former Manchester City centre-back has struggled when settling back in Barcelona since his comeback but has been reviving under Xavi.
Having not tasted defeat in La Liga since December, Xavi will be keen to keep things as stable as possible at the baseline – especially with new Chelsea recruits joining the squad.
Central Defence: Andreas Christensen
Speaking of Chelsea’s other recruit, Christensen now looks set to join in the summer.
The Danish defender is said to have reached an agreement with the Catalan side and will fulfill the rest of his deal at Stamford Bridge.
Christensen has rarely appeared with Chelsea since the end of December as a result of the confrontation between him and his contract with Covid and injury. But with only two months left of the current season, the central defender will be eager to get back in play – this time in red and blue.
Left-back: Jordi Alba
Like Ter Stegen, Jordi Alba has been a mainstay in his position for a number of years and it doesn’t look like he will be replaced anytime soon.
Xavi will be keen to foster a mixture of youth and experience, and having Alba on the wing will be exactly what the team needs should Pique take the back seat.
The 33-year-old is currently on contract until the summer of 2024, so there’s no immediate rush to find his successor just yet.
Midfield: Pedri
Pedri has been an absolute revealer since his appearance on the scene, and is destined to help Xavi and his fresh-faced squad usher in a new era for the club.
The 19-year-old is already making comparisons with his manager and it’s easy to see why, given how talented he is.
With the right training and the right mindset, the sky is the limit for a teenager who looks set to hold his midfield role for years to come.
Midfield: Gavi
Another great product for Barcelona’s famous La Maspea academy, Gavi is a tough – but technically talented – midfielder to perfectly complement Pedri in the middle of the park.
The two have already been compared to Xavi and Iniesta and while that’s a huge compliment, it’s a huge bar for the duo.
However, with Xavi as his mentor, Gavi is another one of the club’s marvels ready to take center stage.
Midfield: Franck Kessie
With Busquets now entering the twilight years of his career, Xavi has decided to bring in Ivory Coast star Frank Kessie from Milan.
Busquets, who turns 34 in July, will certainly continue to play a huge role at the Nou Camp in the coming years, but the free take of Kessie is a huge part of the work for the Catalan side.
Kessie is a versatile midfielder and could just be the man to help run the midfield alongside Jaffe and Pedri.
Right wing: Raphinha
With Ousmane Dembele likely heading out this summer, Barcelona are keen to bring Leeds star Ravenha to the Nou Camp as his replacement.
While it’s not cheap – Leeds want £60m for him – Sportsmail knows Barcelona could make a cash-plus player deal to get him. The Catalan club has always been a fan of the Brazilian but will face competition from Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich for his signature.
If they can hammer out a winger deal, Xavi will be well-equipped to compete on all fronts if they meet their first goal this summer and the next entry on this list…
Stryker: Erling Haaland
The man every club would want to sign this summer. Erling Haaland will have no problems finding a new team, but this is all where he wants to go.
While Laporta stressed that he would not expose the Catalan club to financial risks by signing a player like Haaland or Kylian Mbappe, it is very difficult to ignore the temptation to sign one of the deadliest strikers in the match at the moment.
Reports in Spain indicate that Barcelona will choose Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah if they fail to land Haaland, given that the Egyptian’s contract will expire in 2023.
But with Haaland’s £68m release clause coming into effect this summer, Xavi Laporta will be begging to do everything he can to replace Messi’s once-off goals week in week out.
Left wing: Ansu Fati
As Ferran Torres starts to get back on his feet at Barcelona, the return of Ansu Fati will be music to the ears of all the club’s fans.
The 19-year-old has struggled badly with injuries, but his return to the front line is seen as a huge bonus and will add an extra dimension to the attack.
Fati has only featured five times this season – scoring an impressive three goals with him – but is expected to return once again to Xavi’s setup in the coming months.
. It seems who makes the star-studded seat
Should the likes of Haaland and Ravenha join, that means Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres will have to accept bench roles. In midfield, Busquets and Frenkie de Jong will also provide superb support for Gavi, Pedri and Kessie while Pique, Dani Alves and Ronald Araujo provide more depth in defence.
