Barcelona lost Pedri midway through their 2-3 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt to a rupture in his left biceps femoris, and it’s been confirmed that the young midfielder is set to miss the remainder of the season.
With the season now approaching its business end, the unavailability of Pedri for the rest of the season now poses a big question for Xavi. The 19-year-old has been a constant fixture under Xavi since returning to fitness in late January, scoring three goals in his last six outings.
But as it’s been said before, ‘one man’s pain is another man’s pleasure’. In terms of trophies, Barcelona have absolutely nothing to play for. They are out of all cup competitions and are also 12 points behind leaders Real Madrid in the league with a game in hand.
The situation comes as a blessing in disguise for Xavi as he can actually test his bench strength from hereon. And in doing so, the likes of Nico Gonzalez, Riqui Puig and even Sergi Roberto could get a run-in towards the end.
Following the Europa League exit, Barcelona only have eight matches to play.

Their run starts with a home game against Cadiz on Monday, April 18, followed by a trip to Real Sociedad. Mallorca, Real Betis, Celta Vigo and Getafe follow suit before the team host Villarreal for the final La Liga match.
It’s almost certain that despite having the three aforementioned names available at his disposal, Xavi is most likely to pick Gavi, especially for the important games like Sociedad and Villarreal.
Gavi, who started alongside Sergio Busquets and Pedri against Frankfurt, is already in the good books of Xavi and with Frenkie de Jong returning, his services will be heavily required until the end of the season.
Nico was a regular in Xavi’s Barcelona till the turn of the year, when Barcelona acquired more attackers. Since then, his role has been limited to cameos off the bench.
He has not been able compete with the Gavi, de Jong, Pedri, and Busquets despite having the ability to play in either of the positions.
Puig, meanwhile, is on the same trend since Ronald Koeman, who decided to not use the youngster in his team. His role has not grown under Xavi, but this could be the time he sees some time, at least off the bench.
Roberto’s case, meanwhile, is completely different. He’s been suffering injuries over the last two seasons, and has not yet received any chance to play under Xavi.
The coach has spoken highly about the Spaniard, and it would not be surprising to see him slot in the midfield now that Sergino Dest is fit again. In fact, he would add some much-needed defensive depth in the trident alongside the more attack-minded Gavi and de Jong.
That said, Xavi has often surprised fans with his starting lineups and rotations this season, and with little to nothing to play for at this point, we can expect more changes to the team. Maybe a change of formation? Or more chances for Barcelona B youngsters?
