Xavi is keen to tie key young players to new long-term deals as a priority in the coming months
Barcelona are ready to increase their offer and conclude discussions with Ronald Araujo over a new deal.
The Uruguayan defender has just one year left on his contract at the end of the current season, and the Catalan club are keen to sign him on a new deal as soon as possible.
The 22-year-old has established himself as a key player under Xavi Hernandez and is among the first names on the squad when available.
Araujo is keen to stay at the Camp Nou in the future, but his agents want a higher premium to seal the deal.
Barcelona held talks with Araujo’s agents a number of weeks ago, but although the talks were at an advanced stage, they could not reach an agreement.
The La Liga giants halted talks at the start of the year to focus on the January transfer window, and resumed negotiations this month.
According to Spanish media Sport, the player’s agents were surprised by the financial expenses the club made in January to bring in four players.
They want the La Liga giants to show a similar rating to Araujo in terms of wages offered, after their first offer of €3m per season was rejected.
Xavi has reiterated his desire to keep Araujo at the club, and the Catalan capital club are striving to conclude talks well before the end of the season, and are now ready to increase their offer in order to speed up the process.
Moreover, Barcelona is aware that Araujo has attracted the interest of more than one club in the Premier League.
Manchester United and Chelsea were alerted to the status of Araujo’s contract, and made offers to his agents.
English clubs are willing to double down on Barcelona’s bid, while also offering a massive fee-signing to the central defence.
However, Araujo wants to sign a new long-term agreement with Barcelona as he sees his future at Camp Nou.
This will probably help Barcelona, but they will have to improve their initial offer to ensure that one of Europe’s top young talents does not look for new pastures in the summer.
